An apology

"These are in the majority male concepts? No? War, violence, destruction, c0ck… they hit you in the face… I get it."

I wish to apologise for hitting anyone in the face with c0ck last Friday. Normally my wife provides some sort of restraining influence but it seems I'm guilty of harbouring a wayward member. In future I shall endeavour to keep him safely trousered. I certainly was not aware of this indiscretion nor was it deliberate. But if there is one thing this debate highlights it is that good intentions count for naught.

I further wish to offer apology to anyone who was inadvertently struck by the ladypart which featured in last Friday's performance. I say 'struck' by a ladypart, although on consideration the violence of this term may be gender inappropriate. Perhaps 'stroked' is better.

I intend this metaphorically of course – no ladypart was visible from my vantage point thanks to some judicious staging from Mr Hassell and his fine company of actors (I employ the term 'actor' advisedly in its modern cross-gender sense). I can assure you, had a ladypart been visible, I would have been cognisant of such. Being a man of considerable experience in this field, I have a nose for these things.

Lest any confusion arise, the field to which I refer is theatre.

And thank goodness I say, for where would we be if ladyparts were visible on the theatrical stage? Germany, no doubt. Or the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs which is much the same thing. This may of course change during this evening's performance. As has been noted, the Factory is a young company, and I believe it unwise to smother the fires of experimentation with the sterile safety blanket of propriety.

I have endeavoured to keep this thread as on topic as possible by taking my lead from its title and 'missing the point' entirely.

Yours,

Mr J. Donnelly, BA (Hons)

hey, never said I had anything against the content. Merely noting that to me, a lot of the pieces seemed to come from a masculine place and there may have been space for a different sort of voice in the mix too. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for experimenting with c0ck and ladyparts. Apologies if my post seemed to attack other writers. I'm not.

I enjoyed last Friday and I'll be there again tonight... don't hold back the c0ck, John. Whatever you do.

Although someone has to take responsibility for holding back the c0ck. It's difficult. I wouldn't want to hold back anyone else's c0ck. It's not really my place (nor for that matter my inclination). And neither would I want anyone to feel responsible for holding back mine. But if no one holds back the c0ck then this whole thing could get really messy.

I've seen so many things where you get the sense that no one has stopped to think – should we hold back the c0ck? Everyone assumes that someone else will hold back the c0ck, and as a consequence, no one holds back the c0ck (which can lead to a lot of upset and bad feeling after the fact).

That said, as a man I tend to approach this kind of situation from a particular angle. I find it hard, sometimes impossible to see this from any other angle than my own. Which is what (for me) makes collaboration so rich and rewarding –not essential mind, there's a time and a place.

Has anyone else seen this from a different angle – possibly I'm talking to women here, but this is after all the 21st Century and I wouldn't want to assume it's just women who see these things from another angle? One of the many wonderful things I discovered at university is that men are just as capable of seeing these things from other angles too.

I'm not wanting to apportion blame. Regardless of who made this mess, I think we all have a responsibility to clear it up. Whether we held back the c0ck or not.
