Christopher Logue, ongoing translation of Homer’s Illiad, particularly ‘Cold Calls’ volume (not inspired by the Odyssey but the Illiad, still very useful example of contemporary treatment/interpretation of Homeric themes and verse). Sophocles, Philoctetes (also based more on the Illiad than the Odyssey in terms of plot, but clearly informed by the dramatist’s knowledge of the second epic, and a very interesting take on the character of Odysseus – one of the main characters in this play – as an unreliable, heartless trickster who persuades a young man to perform shameful actions) Calderon, Love, The Supreme Enchantment Calderon, Sorcercies of Sin Goethe, planned and commenced a romantic tragedy about Odysseus and Nausicaa Shakespeare, Twelfth Night TS Eliot, The Waste Land, particularly ‘Death By Water’ (early uncut draft) |
