Months ago I was asked to direct Romeo & Juliet for the teen program of the New England based Rebel Shakespeare Company--a not for profit that runs programs for youngins from as young as 9 to 18...I was told that for the first time ever we would be touring with 10 performances in 10 locations around the Boston area...I was so inspired by the Hamlet Project that I knew immediately how I wanted to approach this...
It is three days in and they are an incredibly talented group. We casted about 3 weeks before rehearsals and ended up having two pairs of R&Js who both learned both parts so who they play can potentially be decided by the audience or in front of them or even change during each show... I learned a bunch of the exercises mentioned in the blog from Yolanda while I was at the Globe and have dug around the blog tirelessly for exercises and finding ideas for how to tackle this play with this group and this time constraint: My objective is to open them up creatively as much as possible, and make a crew of fierce verse-slingers who can adapt to all the variables of having a different place each night (including a play ground and a castle on a lake...). TC's ideas were gold for this. I would love any input or advice from anyone who is so kind as to give it! Will be updating as often as I can manage...
