The Jam StudioThis is a featured page

This is intended as a Factory Studio and can therefore be an end unto itself. It is not designed for working toward a production but toward the greater understanding of our craft, learning about and challenging perceived wisdoms / methodologies and pushing toward greater truth and playfulness.

It is an exploratory studio in which the group can hash out experiments in ACTING, for the benefit of actors and directors and the understanding of the relationship between the two. Writers would be most welcome also although quite how they might be involved would be something to be explored.

The studio is for those who really want to push themselves, those that read books about acting, that question its ideas, that hunger to move the art of acting forward, those that don’t mind getting lost and are excited simply to explore. It will not be for the pedestrian and may involve reading / research around the subject.

The inspiration for the session’s content can come from anywhere, an idea in a book (from the Book Club perhaps), a play, a guest, an actor, an idea from someone via e-mail, etc. We can then explore these ideas with other actors and directors in a risk free environment.

The studio can have a primary leader/s or work on the basis that whoever had the idea or is the most experienced in that field should lead. Maybe at times we even explore as a leaderless group. At all times the work must be documented. This would then be posted here on the website and put up for further web-discussion

  • This could be a great opportunity for our directors to explore in a non-rehearsal setting, leading work, questioning and being questioned / challenging and being challenged.
  • The actors in the group must feel free to lead work, try exercises, expand on ideas they have been taught and explore directing.
  • We can invite directors whose work we saw and wanted to learn from, to take further or test.
  • We can invite actors whom we think have qualities that we want to understand or learn.
  • We can invite teachers / experts in different processes. ( We could do series’ testing perceived wisdoms and schools of thought like The Method, Stanislavski, Harold Guskin, Mamet etc being quite systematic about it.)
Although this studio is not designed in mind of putting on a show, obviously if the exploration leads us to findings that we want to incorporate or base a production on, so much the better.

Acting methodology has shifted and developed from age to age because brave upstarts were willing to stick their necks out, kick up against the establishment and push forward.

This would be open to current Factory members and recommended guests.

If you are interested please send Alex or Tim a message saying so..

This is a clip of two of my favourite actors playing subtext and improvising in a beautifully natural and engaging way. There's an overwhelming emotional honesty in these two and an ability to simply react to whatever the other person gives. This is a perfect example of when American approaches like Meisner technique really get it right. There's something shown (in moments) here-most noticably in the hug at the end of the scene- that I'm yet to see in British Theatre or T.V and that I'm desperate to find!

My problem has been, however, that any workshop I've found that approaches this style of work has been attended by actors of an extremely mixed standard. There have been a lot of amateur actors, people without a passion/drive to act and alot of young actors just starting out on their exploration. I'd love to attend a session with fellow factory members that focused purely on developing actor's abilities to react with one another. Maybe some kind of workshop where everyone exchanges techniques or exercises (they've come across) that help to develop responsiveness in all areas, physically, mentally and vocally. Is this something anyone else would be interested in playing around with? Maybe we could create an exercise from our combined knowledge?
