The Changeling Sessions - BBC Radio 3 - The Factory
As part of The Factory's work with the BBC Radio Drama department, director Jeremy Mortimer would like to set up monthly workshops on the text, themes and characters in Middleton's The Changeling, which is scheduled to be recorded for Radio 3 between 15th and 18th July for broadcast in late November.
PLEASE NOTE THAT SPACES FOR THESE MONTHLY SESSIONS ARE LIMITED.
THEREFORE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE INCLUDED PLEASE RSVP TO TIM@FACTORYTHEATRE.CO.UK
Each workshop will examine one scene, or a part of a scene. We will be working on what it means to bring the play alive for a radio audience, and will experiment with sound and voice. Do bring a copy of the text if you can.

The Changeling (short synopsis)

Beatrice-Joanna (her two names hint at a duplicity from the start) is due to marry Alonzo de Piracquo, a nobleman. The match has been arranged by BJ's father, Captain Vermandero. But BJ has spotted, and fallen in love with another man, Alsemero. And Alsemero is similarly smitten. All this is observed by Vermandero's cynical and pox-blighted henchman, De Flores, who is of course in love with BJ too. Add to this rich mix a sub-plot concerning a jealous old doctor, Alibius and his beautiful young wife, Isabella, who is courted by a young gallant, Antonio, who goes to the lengths of getting himself admitted to Alibius's sanatorium in order to have access to Isabella. BJ finds a way out of her marriage to de Piracquo – she gets De Flores to murder him. But the price she has to pay is a high one – De Flores wants her for himself. BJ succumbs, and marries Alsemero. But he already has his doubts about her chastity, and with De Flores' help, BJ arranges for her maid Diaphanta (a virgin) to sleep with Alsemero on her wedding night. And in order to cover up this trick, De Flores sets fire to Diaphanta's chamber, and she burns to death. The whole construction now begins to collapse as Tomazo de Piracquo's seeks vengeance and – by chance – blames his brother's murder on Alsemero, and Alsemero forces BJ to admit the truth. De Flores and BJ have one last sexual encounter and emerge fatally wounded in each others arms. At the end of the play nearly all the main characters have suffered a change – BJ into whore, De Flores into murderer, Diaphanta into the guise of her mistress, Tomazo the avenger into a saner, sadder person who can only look on and ask 'Are there any more on's ?'.

The next Changeling workshop will be on Wednesday 8th April. I'd like to continue with the work we did on the Beatrice/ Deflores scenes, looking in particular at 11.ii.69 to 11.ii.155 so it might be an idea to have a pretty thorough read of that before we meet. And I also want to do some further work on the language of the asylum. I asked if you might be up for doing a bit of research on the language of the 'mad'. I hope that those of you who came along on Thursday found the session useful/ informative/ entertaining (feedback would be useful). I haven't listened through to the recordings yet, but when I have I might put some bits up on the blog.

Really looking forward to workingb with The Factory on this play. At this stage I don't really have an agenda. The key thing for me is to find out how to make the play work in sound. What is the world that it inhabits ? And who are the key characters. There are lots of tricky technical issues, one or two of which we may touch on at the first session. How does the aside work for a radio audience. And how on earth do we realise the world of the asylum.
